March/ April 2012
The school continues to thrive with numbers now at around 150 children. All were very proud to have their photos taken in their Westbourne uniform and to show off their work to their guardians at the end of term. The tests that the children sat to demonstrate that they have attained the Zambian curriculum level for their age group have gone very well with many children making significant progress.
The Genesis Programme volunteers each received a 25kg bag of maize as a small token of thanks for the work that they have been doing visiting the sick & supporting people who are struggling with their HIV status.
The HBC Kids group had great fun holding an Easter sweetie Hunt on Good Friday, hearing the Christian message, making cards, singing songs and saying prayers.
September 2011
A freak whirlwind hit the school building on Tuesday 27th September badly damaging the roof of the school hall which now needs 16 roof sheets to repair it. Thankfully no one was hurt and all the children were in their classrooms at the time otherwise they would have been blown off their feet by the force of the wind. Everyone was, however, very shaken by the noise as the whole school rattled as the roof was literally ripped off!
August 2011
Disaster has struck the water supply at the school site in Kaloko & we need to replace the pump & the 98 metre piping. Currently Mike & the guys at the farm are having to transport water from the farm well as there is no other fresh water supply for the school, the HBC Centre & the maize mill so we need to appeal for financial support to replace the parts.
July 2011..we have welcomed Gemma Stewart, a primary school teacher from NZ to join us as a volunteer for the next 6 months or so to help us develop our school in Kaloko. Wonderful also to welcome back Laura Christie another teacher from UK who is with us for the summer period to help lick systems into place and take part in summer activities with the HBC children.
20th May 2011...we need to recruit volunteer teachers for the school in Kaloko. Please see the ad on the volunteer page. Are you a teacher who would like a volunteer opportunity in Zambia? Perhaps you know someone that would be ideal...we would love to hear from you.
September 13th 2010 ...lessons started today in the new school building. There is a real sense of joy in each classroom.
September 10th 2010 ....the children arrived at 6am so excited that today the school is opening. Honoured guests from local government, church representatives, donors and volunteers gathered together for the dedication ceremony lead by Bishop Dickson Mwewa & Miguel Escobar & for the ribbon to be cut by the Minister's Representative for the copperbelt. The children sang their new anthem & then all enjoyed a Hog Roast lunch. The Jungle Gym proved a real hit with the children who were swinging, bouncing & climbing for the rest of the afternoon.
September 3rd 2010....the maize mill building is being painted and the kitchen at the school is being finished today. There are people painting and varnishing everywhere you look.
September 2nd 2010....a long drive to Kitwe today to buy furniture for the medical room and some tables for the school library. Meanwhile the library books are being put into place on their new shelves.
September 1st 2010......preparations are underway for the official opening & dedication of our new build Westbourne Trust School in Kaloko, Ndola on 10th Sept. New teachers have been interviewed and appointed, the children are learning the new school anthem, the education board have been to inspect and now today the fire department are here to issue our safety certificate.
